It's on-brand for them as a franchise game, link has had console playability since N64. The same for animal crossing, chibi stuff is on brand. Like the one where link is a weird painting hieroglyphic. Why would you not want to appeal to the older fanbase even slightly? People keep talking about link's awakening but they do wacky stuff for zelda franchise all the time.
