Only once you purchase a skill does it actually count your EXP towards leveling up. It was only many hours into the game that I realized you had to click on Dynasty to get to your character sheet, where you could assign EXP to purchase skills. I got lots of gold and EXP, both from robbing and from buying new titles, but I waited and waited to level up, as you need to be Level 3 before you can upgrade your buildings to the next level. I set up a little bandit camp and robbed passing caravans. As it is, my impression is that the game is… well, it’s got some interesting ideas, I kinda like where they were trying to go, but I’m struggling to find the actual “fun” in the game. I played about 6 hours, but please be aware that I dove right into it and as such I may have been playing the game “wrong”.
I’ve never played a Guild game before, but thought I’d give it a shot.
Sorry if any broken english, not my first language.I picked it up on a lark on Steam over the weekend. But it's easily one of the most rich, original and fun entrepeneur-like games.
The latest expansion and standalone game, Renaissance, is 10€ on gamersgate. It was broken at first, but several expansions and mods later, it is as playable as it gets. No other game brings you the satisfaction of watching the city's magistrate (your son) and the city's attorney (your wife) get your worse rival sentenced to death for the theft of 2 gold coins. You then have to consider : should I still buy that resource ? Should I try something else ? Or should I go to another local market, taking the risk of being mugged while on the road ? The market is dynamic : if there is not much of a resource, it will be more expensive. Every business expands, with more workers, bigger workplace, more products, and more businesses. You compete against other families ("dynasties") and either try them in court or simply kill them with some hired thugs. Not only that, you can run a political career !. No other game that I know of lets you keep the company in your family : you can have children who will pass on your graveyard for future generations' profit. It lets you own and operate any profitable entreprise : pub, hospital, woodcrafter's shop, smuggler's den, mercenary camp, even a church or a graveyard, among many others. It's the only renaissance-themed entrepeneur game on the market.
